Due to the severity of volcanic ash surrounding Bandung and Yogyakarta, Malaysia Airlines flights to and from these two cities will be cancelled until the situation improves.

Currently, flights connecting Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta are expected to be cancelled today (6 November 2010) and tomorrow (7 November 2010) morning. Malaysia Airlines will continue observing the Indonesian air space to ascertain the safety of flight operations into the area after 7 November 2010.

The following flights are affected:

  • Jakarta - Kuala Lumpur (MH722, MH724) scheduled to depart 6 November 2010 will be cancelled.
  • Jakarta - Kuala Lumpur (MH726) scheduled to depart 7 November 2010 will also be cancelled.
  • Kuala Lumpur - Yogyakarta (MH857) will be delayed until further notice.
  • Yogyakarta - Kuala Lumpur (MH856) will be delayed until further notice.
  • Kuala Lumpur - Bandung (MH859) will be delayed until further notice.
  • Bandung - Kuala Lumpur (MH858) will be delayed until further notice.

Malaysia Airlines Director of Operations, Captain Azharuddin Osman said, "The volcanic ash presence in the airways surrounding Jakarta could cause severe damage to our aircraft and engines which could impair the safety of our operations including passengers and crew. As always, safety is our top priority.

"We will only be able to confirm the flight schedules once the situation has improved and clearance from the relevant civil aviation authorities has been received. In the meantime, we will continue to monitor the situation closely," he added.

Passengers on the affected flights have 3 options:

  • Get a full refund depending on the terms and conditions of the fare type
  • Exchange tickets to fly to Surabaya (for passengers from Kuala Lumpur). However, ground arrangements upon arrival will not be covered.
  • Re-book on the next available flight

As the situation remains volatile, passengers are advised to check the flight status at www.malaysiaairlines.com before proceeding to the airport. Alternatively, passengers can also call the Malaysia Airlines Call Center 1300-88-3000 (within Malaysia), +603-7843 3000 (outside Malaysia) or our ticketing offices for the latest schedules.
